George Nakashima
20 TAMARA DR, Roosevelt NJ 08555
Home for Sale for $350,000 with 4 bedrooms and 2 full baths. This 3,147 square foot home was built in 1931 on a lot size of 0.5 Acre(s).
George Nakashima, renowned woodworker, designed the expansion of fellow-artist, Ben Shahn~~~s, home in historic Roosevelt, NJ. Expansive rooms with walls of glass and lush wooded views are the perfect venue for Nakashima~~~s organic works of art and his sculptural built-ins remain untouched. Benches exceeding 10 and 20 feet showcase the knots and burls of English oak, while walnut floors were painstakingly laid to highlight varying grains. Floating cabinets and dressers have simple, practical beauty. In addition to the Nakashima-designed master suite and indoor and outdoor living spaces with two stone fireplaces, the original structure has a dining room, kitchen, three bedrooms, a bath, and an intriguing history of its own. Part of a 1930~~~s planned community, known as Jersey Homestead, with a distinct Bauhaus architectural style, the house was designed by architect Louis Kahn. A separate studio with heated storage rooms sits next to a small pond. Deed restriction with The New Jersey Historical Trust in progress.
